This family embraces three genera, readily distinguishable by osteological characters—Alligator, Caiman, and Jacare.

Such are the general characters and mode of arrangement of the dorsal and ventral armour of Jacare.

In the young Jacare mentioned above, I found the dermis to be 27 distinguishable into two layers.
